Before you buy
Do I need a phone to use a smartwatch?
Yes, for setup and for most features. Cellular models can make calls and stream music without a phone nearby, but they are still set up through one.
Can I use an Apple Watch with an Android phone?
No. Apple Watch requires an iPhone. Android owners can choose Galaxy Watch, Pixel Watch, other Wear OS models, Garmin, Amazfit and more. See the compatibility page.
How accurate are wrist heart-rate sensors?
Generally good at rest and during steady effort, and less reliable during hard intervals or when the strap is loose. A chest strap such as the Polar H10 is a better reference for interval training.
Are smartwatch sleep scores medically reliable?
No. Scores and sleep stages are estimates that help you notice habits. If you are worried about your sleep, speak to a health professional.
How long should a smartwatch battery last?
One to two days for full-featured watches, and several days to a couple of weeks for many fitness-focused models. Read our battery tests.
Is a cheap fitness band enough?
For steps, basic heart-rate and sleep, often yes. Choose a full smartwatch if you want maps, payments, apps or advanced training tools.
Can I swim with a smartwatch?
Check the water rating. 5 ATM or WR50 is generally suitable for pool swimming, and a swim mode helps with lap tracking. Rinse the watch with fresh water after the sea or a chlorinated pool.
Do smartwatches need a subscription?
Not for core features. Some brands offer optional paid tiers for extra insights or guided workouts, and cellular models need a plan from your mobile carrier.
What size watch should I buy?
Measure your wrist and try on cases if you can. A comfortable, snug fit improves both comfort and sensor accuracy.
How often should I replace a smartwatch?
Many owners keep a watch for three to five years, depending on battery health and how long the brand supports it with software updates.
